Peptide research glossary

Lyophilization: Freeze-drying: water is removed from a frozen solution under vacuum so the ice sublimates directly to vapor, yielding a stable dry powder or cake.
Bacteriostatic water: Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, used in the laboratory to reconstitute lyophilized material across repeated withdrawals.
HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography): An analytical method that separates a sample into its components and reports the target compound as a percentage of total peak area — the standard measure of peptide purity.
Mass spectrometry (MS): An analytical method that measures a compound's molecular mass to confirm its identity against the expected value.
Certificate of Analysis (COA): A lot-specific document reporting the tested identity and purity of one production lot, alongside the lot number, date of analysis, and testing laboratory.
Reconstitution: Dissolving a lyophilized powder in a diluent, such as bacteriostatic water, to prepare a solution for in-vitro laboratory work.
Purity: The proportion of a sample that is the target compound, reported as an area percentage by HPLC.
Lot (batch): A single production run of a compound; testing and the Certificate of Analysis are specific to one lot.
Molecular weight: The mass of one molecule of a compound, used to confirm identity by mass spectrometry.
Net peptide content: The portion of a vial's mass that is the peptide itself, excluding counter-ions, salts, and residual moisture.
