BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide, sequence Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, molecular weight approximately 1419.55 Da, first described by Sikirić and colleagues in 1993 as a fragment of a protein isolated from human gastric juice. It shows no sequence homology with known intestinal peptides and is described as stable in water and gastric juice. It has not been approved for use by the FDA or other global regulatory authorities, and the review literature notes an absence of sufficient and comprehensive clinical studies confirming effects in humans, no validated dosing regimen, and no completed Phase II trial.
