Research reference
MOTS-c (mitochondrial open reading frame of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino-acid mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded by the 12S rRNA region of the mitochondrial genome, first described in 2015. Under metabolic stress it translocates to the nucleus in an AMPK-dependent manner. The described mechanism involves disruption of the folate–methionine cycle, accumulation of AICAR, and downstream AMPK activation, with reported effects on GLUT4 expression. Circulating levels are reported to decline with age. Research use only. Not for human consumption.
